Celebrating the long awaited arrival of spring today with a few of our favorite photos! We love watching our gardens come alive with color as the days grow warmer.

What is the Vernal Equinox anyway?

It’s the official start of spring in the northern hemisphere. Marked by the sun passing directly over the equator, bringing equal amounts of day and night across our planet. This year, the alignment happens on March 19 at 11:06 pm in our location. Making today the first full day of spring.

Celebrated by many different cultures around the world for thousands of years. It’s a time of universal balance, growth, and renewal. A time to reset and begin again. New season. New possibilities.

April ushers in the most wonderful time of the year – Spring!

With the warming weather and Earth Day on the horizon, it’s only appropriate that landscape design is also celebrated. No wonder April is dedicated as World Landscape Architecture Month. At Campion Hruby, we are committed to amplifying the unique character of each canvas with the intention of creating meaningful connections between people and nature. Originally initiated by the American Society of Landscape Architects, WLAM is now internationally celebrated by organizations and societies, including CHLA. We are pleased to be a part of a network of advocates for a more beautiful world.

Meadows!

Meadows are making more regular appearances in our gardens here at CHLA. It’s fun to watch them evolve from season to season and year to year as dormant seed beds awake.

We love a green lawn – it’s a staple of the American dream. But meadows are the dream of landscape architects. We could compare lawns to meadows and debate the merits of each, but we think there’s a time and place for both… and this blog post is about showing off some of our favorite meadows.

We hope you enjoy these photos of meadows we’ve been working on as much as we do. There is so much energy, activity, color, texture that you can sense just from looking at the photos. Imagine what it feels like to walk through one!

Thanks to Larry Weaner Landscape Associates who collaborated with us on several of these projects.

We are excited to announce that our Willow Hill project has just won a Merit Award at the 2022 Perennial Plant Association!

Willow Hill demonstrates how thoughtful design and site planning can positively improve the health of a waterfront property. Despite a multitude of hardscape and landscape challenges, the new owners’ request for an undemanding garden that harmonized with the tidewater ethos was fulfilled. Extensive drainage was added around the house and overlaid with a palette of colorful native grasses and perennials. In lowland areas of the site, the landscape architects repaired a collapsed stormwater pipe, filled a sinkhole, reduced the extent of the lawn, and planted a large “sponge” of native wetland species.

Big news! Our Ironstone project has just won a Merit Award from the 2022 Perennial Plant Association.

Architect: Hansen Architects
Landscape Contractor: Scapes Inc.

When the clients purchased this property in 2015, they were confronted with a maze of masonry spread across their property — all created with an orangey-brown stone that the locals call ironstone.
In addition to the existing hardscapes, the waterfront site boasted a main house, guest cottage, and the ruins of an earlier home, felled by a hurricane and abandoned.
The clients brought on the landscape architects to create order from this chaos, and requested that the masterplan include a pool, shade pergola, terraces, and a complete planting overhaul.
Across the rest of the property, the landscape architects used stepping stone paths, rebuilt ironstone walls, and recommended planting edits to knit together the main house, pool, guest cottage, piers, and waterfront gardens.
Along the waterfront, existing hardscapes were preserved to save money; budgets were instead spent on removing invasive species and establishing strong perennial buffers between the house and the water.
The final result is a landscape that feels both old and new — with materials rooted in the past and a modern planting palette.
