A bio pool— also known as a natural swimming pool or eco-pool —is designed to maintain water quality through biological filtration rather than chlorine or bromine. These systems replicate the processes found in healthy aquatic ecosystems, using beneficial bacteria, specialized filtration media, and, in some cases, a dedicated regeneration zone with aquatic plants to remove excess nutrients from the water. By depriving algae of the nutrients it needs to thrive, bio pools naturally maintain clear, balanced water without conventional chemical sanitizers.

Located in Potomac, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC, this residence stands apart from the developer driven, over-sized traditional and pseudo-traditional houses found in many of the adjacent neighborhoods. Differing from the conventional aesthetic, the owners of this project had a vision for design that embraced optimism and creativity in the face of a daily reality that conspires against deviation and rewards risk avoidance.

How to Make the Most of Your Outdoor Living Space This Summer

Designing an outdoor space today is no afterthought—it’s an extension of how we live. Whether it’s a shaded chaise by the pool, a large dining table for entertaining, or a quiet bench for an afternoon read, outdoor furniture has become essential to everyday living, enticing us with the possibility of open space and connection to nature. The most inviting homes blur the line between indoors and out, creating a seamless flow with just as much comfort and style outside as in.

Campion Hruby Landscape Architects is proud to announce that founding principal Robert C. “Bob” Hruby, ASLA, has been elevated to the Council of Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)—one of the highest honors in the profession. The formal investiture took place in October during the 2025 ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in New Orleans. Elevation to the Council of Fellows recognizes landscape architects who have made exceptional and sustained contributions to the field across works, leadership, knowledge, and service.

“Bob’s induction is a meaningful reflection of the impact he has made across decades of design practice,” said Kevin Campion, co-founding principal of Campion Hruby Landscape Architects. “His thoughtful stewardship, commitment to craft, and passion for planting design have shaped extraordinary places and inspired all of us who have the privilege of working beside him.”

Over his distinguished career, Hruby has led more than 300 design projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond, including public gardens, campuses, civic landscapes, and private estates. His work is defined by a deep commitment to ecological integrity, native plant stewardship, and placemaking rooted in regional character and natural systems. Among his notable projects is the ecological parking garden at Adkins Arboretum, a transformative landscape that replaces conventional paving with stormwater-filtration systems and immersive learning environments—demonstrating how sustainability and beauty can coexist in public design.

Beyond his design achievements, Hruby is recognized as a generous mentor and advocate for emerging professionals, shaping future leaders while advancing design excellence across the profession.

“The 2025 Class of ASLA Fellows reflects the very best of landscape architecture—visionary leaders whose work uplifts communities, restores ecosystems, and advances climate-ready design,” said ASLA President Kona Gray, FASLA, PLA. ASLA CEO Torey Carter-Conneen added, “This year’s Fellows have transformed places and policies, inspired future leaders, and advanced equity, resilience, and beauty in the built and natural world. We are honored to recognize their extraordinary contributions to the profession and to society.”

Founded in 2010, Campion Hruby Landscape Architects has earned recognition for designing award-winning gardens throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Guided by a modern aesthetic and a dedication to sustainable methods, the firm creates landscapes that forge lasting connections between people, architecture, and the land.

Founded in 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) represents more than 16,000 members nationwide, advancing the mission to empower landscape architects to design a sustainable world.

This year, Parking Day was held on State Circle and the theme was community outreach and civic opportunity. We had fun inviting people to grab a plant, decorate a pot, and take it with them!

What is parking day??

Parking Day is an annual event where communities, designers and store owners temporarily transform parking spaces into vibrant parks or creative interventions. Started in 2005 in San Francisco, the event has grown into a global movement. Participants use this day to reimagine urban spaces and highlight the importance of creating more people-centric environments.

At CHLA Parking Day is right up our alley! Each year it gives us a chance to celebrate our passion for transforming urban spaces into vibrant, green environments—something we’ve always believed in. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with the community and highlight how sustainable designs can make cities more enjoyable and eco-friendly. Let’s turn concrete into something that nurtures both people and the planet!

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is now a part-time resident of D.C., having purchased a historic home in Kalorama — a property Campion Hruby had the privilege of working on alongside architect Robert Gurney. While the headlines focus on the home’s high-profile buyer, we’re proud to have contributed to the landscape design, which complements the refined architectural vision and offers a quiet sense of place in one of Washington’s most storied neighborhoods.

At first glance, it may seem like not much is happening in this garden in the middle of winter. But if you look closely, you’ll see it’s business as usual at the Winterberry buffet!

Winterberry fruit and seeds are a valuable food source for wildlife during the winter months when other resources are scarce. And, of course, we love the extra pop of color!

Last week we celebrated Parking Day! This annual global event aims to raise awareness of the need for more urban open green spaces. This year our theme was Alice in Wonderland. We had a great time creating a garden tea party in the middle of West St.
